Collaboration: The Socialite Family x Oh My Cream Advent Calendar

There are some duets that multiply the power of beauty like no other. Cosmetics on the one hand, design on the other. The two have come together to create a hybrid object that will delight the big kids in all of us: The Socialite Family x Oh My Cream advent calendar. To mark its release, Constance Gennari and Juliette Levy Cohen, the respective founders of these iconic brands, got together to discuss it, but also to talk about the power of beauty and transmission. It was an eventful meeting, four years after a first collaboration that had already attracted many admirers.

Constance, Juliette, how did you meet?

Constance

The first time was a few years ago for another joint project: The Socialite Family toiletry bag, which already contained some Oh My Cream products. It was a great partnership. So when you came to me again for this piece, which is a staple in your house, I was so happy.

Juliette

We were delighted that you agreed to do it again, because we actually met four or five years ago. I'd just had my baby and we made the summer kit together. I have very fond memories of this collaboration. It was a hit.

How did the idea of putting together an Advent calendar come about?

Constance

The Oh My Cream advent calendar is iconic with its full-size products - these are not samples. People wait for it every year. It was a great challenge for us to work on it.

Juliette

It's true that our calendar is always out of stock. This year, we were delighted to team up with The Socialite Family to come up with an iconic decorative object. The idea was to be able to keep it over time.

TSF

So, was it important for you to create an object in its own right that would last and that could be used over and over again, even after the festive season?

Juliette

Absolutely! It's a real box that you can keep and display in your living room. And for the first time, we can actually remove all the drawer systems and create a really big box. They're not just little drawers you can put your jewellery in. We aim to improve every year. This time we can fit the kids' Lego, underwear, everything. We have a lot of values in common with The Socialite Family, particularly the CSR approach, which is very important to us. It was obvious that we couldn't produce an advent calendar every year that was just packaging, a receptacle. It had to be something you'd want to display in your own home.

Constance

And above all, it's made in Italy. And that means a lot to me because, as you know, I'm Franco-Italian. And at The Socialite Family, we work a lot in Italy. All our fabrics, seating, lighting, etc. are made there for the exceptional craftsmanship. So I'm very proud that it's the same for this company.

Juliette

That's also why we came looking for you, because we know you have a love of local know-how whenever possible. That you like beautiful, timeless, well-thought-out objects with real manufacturing values behind them. And that means a lot to us. We really do have that in common.

And why did we want this advent calendar to take the form of a travel vanity?

Constance

I've always loved this object, which you take with you when you travel and usually leave in your room afterwards. I thought it was incredible to have a trunk like that, to revisit its look without altering its original purpose, which was to store our beauty products. Then it's up to you to interpret it as you wish. Readers, when you get it home, tell us what you're going to do with it! It's always interesting to find out about the life of objects.

Tell us about the designs you chose for the vanity case.

Constance

You never change who you are, so of course I worked with leopard print and stripes. For us, leopard print is a cult and timeless jacquard pattern. I like to mix it with other patterns that stand out. This is the case with our stripe, which has been in the collection for a while. I always try to play with contrasting shapes and materials.

Juliette

That's what I loved about it! I have to admit, I'd never have imagined that these unexpected patterns could go together and in fact it works perfectly. When I first opened the vanity case, I remember feeling that very surprise when I saw the first photos.

Juliette, you've chosen a number of The Socialite Family pieces for your new offices. Which ones and why?

Juliette

It's true that we had a lot of fun. We moved into our new offices just over a year ago. And when it came to decorating, I looked at The Socialite Family in particular. I love beautiful things and I noticed that I had a better day when I had clothes that I felt good in, and I never worked as efficiently as I did in a nice office that reflected who I was. So naturally we thought of The Socialite Family. We have a large Carlotta table with Libera chairs in our meeting room. We've also tried to come up with lots of cosy little corners where you can have informal meetings or work on your computer without having to sit on a chair in the office. I absolutely fell in love with the Rotondo heaters in white bouclette. They are very warm, with a small Carlotta side table in creamy white. I like white a lot. The offices are very white (laughs). It does have an effect.

Constance

Thank you! If you want to change the cover and put on a nice leopard print, you can. Everything is removable.

Juliette

I didn't know! Maybe I'll dare now that we're going to have the calendar in the office.

How do you cultivate beauty?

Juliette

For me, beauty is very important in everyday life. I really associate it with something that makes me feel good. There's nothing more subjective than that, but it's true that a beautiful material, a design that will last over time, a product that will bring me comfort and make me feel better, that's absolutely essential. On a day-to-day basis, it really makes a difference to my day. As I said, I really like white. I have to admit it calms me down. Over time I've learnt to add a few little touches of colour, thanks in particular to your brand, Constance. The Duetto vase, for example, is the kind of piece that adds subtle touches of colour.

Constance

You're right, beauty has to be cultivated on a daily basis. There's also the beauty routine. We tell ourselves it's natural, that we want to have our own little beauty routine every day. Everyone has it in their own way, through their upbringing too. And you with Oh My Cream! You're so good at offering a wide range of products that are both appealing and well formulated. In my everyday life, I'm constantly on the lookout for beauty. That also changes with age. It's a bit like creams, you change them over time, your taste changes with age too. It becomes more assertive, you want other things. Today, however, I'm in more of an 80s period, which is going to be more about black and lacquer, but not just that, because I'm going to mix it with ochre and with patterns, old or new. A lot of tapestries at the moment too. It's constantly evolving. Five years ago, I wasn't into it at all. And in five years' time, I might not want to be doing it at all anymore. Beauty is everywhere. You have to be able to see it and look around you.

Beauty is about transmission. As mothers, what advice would you pass on to your children?

Juliette

When I was very young, my mother taught me to take care of myself in the simplest, but most common-sense way: cleanse my skin properly at night, moisturise it in the morning, add a little blush or a bit of shine to the mix, with a lot of subtlety and naturalness, always with the desire to be a better version of yourself, but without it showing. I think that deep down, what she wanted to pass on to me and instil in me, and I can never thank her enough, is a real confidence in myself. I think that's also why I chose this profession, because for me, there's nothing frivolous about selling creams, because it helps people to take care of themselves and, over time, to have more self-confidence. In the end, I think that's what I want to pass on to my two little boys, because I think it's something absolutely essential that makes all the difference. In life, having self-confidence, believing in yourself and daring to be yourself can sometimes be achieved through beauty, through simple everyday gestures that allow you to reconnect with your skin, your body and who you are.

Constance

Well said! I have two teenagers at home: my 12-year-old daughter and my 14-year-old son (the little one is four). And inevitably you start to look in the mirror, not to mention the influence of social networks. It's very interesting. My daughter is much more into beauty products than I am.

Juliette

You know we've got a lot of much sharper girls who bring their mums into the shop to show them our products.

Constance

 That doesn't surprise me. I love seeing my daughter discover herself. I've got children who are searching for their personality, in any case, I want them to try things out. I want them to explore. They ask my opinion, but I tell them: that's my opinion, but after that, it's your personality, don't do what I do, especially don't do what I do. So they see, they experiment, but they still come back to me most of the time (smile).
