The Never-ending Joys of Rattan

Rattan enjoyed its first success during the Second Empire with its winter gardens, where you could enjoy the light outside while staying indoors. However, it was after the war, when the fashion for second homes – which people wished to furnish in ways other than their urban interior – appeared on the scene, that rattan became more popular. And then in the 1970s the desire for authenticity and a return to nature resurfaced. At that time, cane and woven rattan became omnipresent and adorned a great deal of the furniture available. And still, today, this skilled form of cane weaving evokes in us a wish for the ‘good life’ and the sunshine. It is synonymous with travel, and a return to the simple things in life Essentials. And this is why we don’t limit ourselves to just one piece! Since its return to our lives – which coincides with the craze for “vintage” and Scandinavian style – rattan is now, more than ever, present in the bedrooms of adults and children alike. An ornamental headboard, a child’s bed or a baby’s cradle… However, this fibre conceals a huge potential that we want to enjoy all year round and not just at night! Bright, warm: see on The Socialite Family how many families have adopted it, starting in the living room. It may be a cane sofa at Valentine Gauthier’s home, an entire living space including an armchair, table or chair at Yoan Marciano‘s or a bar in Annick Lestrohan‘s apartment. Or how about Laia Aguilar‘s bedside table, or even a light fixture, our Gioia table lamp or our Amalfi wall lights and pendants? One thing is sure: rattan creates an effect. Mixed with other materials, colours or patterns to create contrasts, this material can be really surprising in a decorative scheme. It’s hard to get tired of it! Here’s an illustration in just a few pictures of where the unique colour combinations of rattan and the thousand ways it can be used give us more than ever a foretaste of summer.
