The Colourful Masterpiece of a Consummate Artist

Guillermo Santomá et Raquel Quevedo

When you pass through the carved door of Casa Horta, you enter the mind of Guillermo Santomá. A wild colourist, an architect and also a talented designer, the artist has taken possession of this 20th century house and designed it as he would for a client. Himself. Three floors of vibrant beauty, oscillating between pink, deep green and even a sky painted by Santomà himself. An impeccably mastered geometry that absorbs everything in its path. Even the rare furniture, most of it being integrated into this fabulous and slightly kaleidoscopic new envelope. “To create is to destroy” is a motto he has made his own by giving a second skin to this building charged with history. The very one that made him move with his partner, Raquel Quevedo, to the Guinardó neighbourhood on the hillside, with a birds-eye view over the Catalan capital. Elsewhere, they were suffocating. Here, they are inventing. Together. A book, a scenography, a child! Projects are pouring in and they continue to live as they see fit. A happy nonchalance made of readings, experiences and artistic adventures where the process of distortion and recreation is constant. Barcelona, the city of creativity has so much to offer them. Without further delay, immerse yourself in the conceptual world of these enlightened dreamers who work without safety nets for the love of risk. Here, the images are worth a thousand words.

Guillermo, Raquel, who are you?

Guillermo

Raquel has her own grafic design studio. I have my workshop from where I construct everything I make, architectural, design and exhibitions projects. Usually we work together: for example, currently we are making a book, and all the design for a museum exhibition in Barcelona.

TSF

How did you find your house?

Raquel

We found it on Internet. We were looking for a house in Barcelona, Guillermo was living in the countryside and he needed some exterior space. When we saw the house we just fell in love.

TSF

How long have you been living here?

Guillermo

Two years, and the construction is not done yet.

TSF

Why this choice of colours on the wall? Is there a signification?

Guillermo

This isan old and very stylish house, we didn’t want to lose that, so we used colour like a ornamentation. All rooms have different colours: you can discover the house room by room, with different holes connecting everything.

Witch color do you prefer?

Guillermo & Raquel

We like all colors together, we can’t choose one. I thing that the really important thing in the project was to think the house like one space.

TSF

Are you working together with your wife Raquel?

Guillermo

Yes, she helps me with all my graphics. I’ve always loved the idea of making graphic artwork, and at last we are creating it together.

TSF

Who chose the furniture? Where do you look for a piece of furniture for your house?

Guillermo

I choose all the furniture, but in the end we only have chairs in the house. How I choose is something that I can’t explain, it comes from the eyes. I used to buy furniture from one guy in Barcelona: after coming back often, I can now say that we have become friends.

What kind of period are you prefer in design?

Guillermo

Just contemporary. I only have one ancien piece, a Mackintosh, and that is because it has been one of my favorite chairs for a long time.

TSF

Raquel, how would you describe the concept of MyBarrio?

Raquel

MyBarrio is something that gives colours to our city. It is somewhere where you can go and meet with your friends. I also made something with Deux Souliers (a shoes brand in Barcelona) in MyBarrio and it was very funny!

TSF

Could you gives us a good restaurant in Barcelona?

Guillermo & Raquel

We like very normal places. In the end, the best places are the ones that people don’t know. We used to go to a Gallego near home, we also like a French food place Au Port de la Lune, and one of the classics: Flash Flash!

TSF

3 words to describe your lifestyle?

Guillermo & Raquel

We just make the things that we want. Be relax and work, stay at home and read was our perfect plan. But now that Jan is here, everything is different!
